Despite much googling and searching the forums, I am unable to get
thunderbird to open links in firefox. I have a nagging suspicion that
the problem might be AMD64-related due to the dearth of info out there.
I have set:
pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http","/usr/bin/firefox");
pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https","/usr/bin/firefox");
in /usr/lib64/MozillaThunderbird/defaults/pref/all-thunderbird.js - and
this shows up in about:config (you need an extension to actually display
this in thunderbird 1.0.4).
However, when clicking on a link in an email thunderbird outputs:
/usr/lib/MozillaThunderbird/mozilla-xremote-client: Error: Failed to
send command: 509 internal error
Browser doesn't understand command
Has anybody else seen this behavior? Could this be related to using a
32-bit firefox and a 64-bit thunderbird? I'd rather not use 64-bit
firefox since I have the occasional need to use flash, and the last time
I tried it (only a few months ago) it was still crashing frequently.

Try mozilla-launcher-1.41. This works for me with
mozilla-thunderbird-1.0.6-r2 and mozilla-firefox-1.0.6-r1.
