I don't know for other problems, but about this I can say I added the 
following lines:
=x11-libs/gtk+-2.6.8
=x11-libs/gtk+-2.6.7
=x11-libs/gtk+-2.6.10-r1
to /etc/portage/package.mask with a comment of this kind: "to stop a 
persistent oscillation"

Some programs need gtk+-2.6, so when gtk is blocked, you have to upgrade 
them, at this moment I can't remember the exact list. They will be 
exposed by an "emerge -vaDu world"
