I can't understand the manual entry for cp -a. It says 

-a, --archive
              Preserve as much as possible of the structure and attributes 
of the original files  in the copy (but do not preserve directory 
structure).

Where does it put the files if it doesn't preserve the directory structure? 
What happens to the directory structure?
