My Qt is 64-bit:
$ file /usr/qt/3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3.6
/usr/qt/3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.3.6: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64,
version 1 (SYSV), stripped

Perhaps you've configured your system incorrectly, but using an x86 install
CD (and handbook) rather than an amd64 install CD (and handbook).
