In order for the kernel to find the root partition, the correct hardware drivers must be 'built-in'. The modules are in /lib/modules/<kernel_version>/... so if the kernel can't find the root partition (no appropriate built-in hardware driver) it certainly can't load a module stored under the root ('/') tree.

Found the problem. On the bios JMB36x must be set to AICH mode. After that it works fine.
