1.      I have never yet found a way to tell grub to boot Win XP - it
        always either reboots endlessly, or stops after complaining
        that it can't find its boot loader.

No, I didn't fall into that trap. And you're right, the grub-static ebuild 
says:
DEPEND="!sys-boot/grub"
