It's probably not your display manager that's the problem, just X.
Turn off xdm and try to start X on its own with 'startx' from the
command line (you may want to use the VESA driver to start with if the
default auto-detected config breaks)

if it is xdm (which I doubt), why not try kdm or gdm?
