Have a look at /usr/portage/distfiles
all the tarballs needed to install an ebuild are stored here and not
erased, IIRC. So you can just erase some big tar's there, which should
give you enough free space to at least do your updates.


I dont't know what you are using this machine for, but I think, 2.8G for
/ are not much.

this is my setup:
