Okay, I'm sucking it up and emerging kde4.1. So far so good on getting the

However, on the emerge I get this qca blocker (where 1.0 is blocking 2.0)

But, to me that makes no sense at all. What exactly should I do to fix
this?
uninstall the 1.0-r3 version and install the new 2.0.0-r2 version. i only
have the 2.0.0 installed and both kde 3.5 and kde4 are working. usually when
blockers are around you'll just have to uninstall the older version and only
use the newer one.
What's weird is I don't have the 1.0 version installed. I had 2.0
installed when I went to 4.0.5.
