You can use a chroot wrapped with linux32 (sys-apps/util-linux) to build a secondary complete 32bit gentoo installation inside your 64bit box, which is something I do prefere because it prevents many nasty interferences between 64 and 32 bit toolchains and libraries or broken platform detection in packages themselves. see: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/howtos/index.xml?part=1&chap=2 raxas
