Replying to my own message but looks like I've found the problem. It appears to be a long standing bug in portage. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-457692-highlight-catalyst+loop.html http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131207 Looks like it has been resolved in portage-2.0.54-r2 and there is also a patch available for portage-2.0.54-r1.
