I'm not sure I really understand the syntax for an overlay? does everything within the directory specified have to be where it goes? IE if my directory is /tmp/overlay would I have to have /tmp/overlay/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf to change that? also any hints on what needs to be changed to make the firefox updated screen go away? I know how to change the other custom settings I need for it. but I don't want it to say it was just updated...

All of these can probably be accomplished with an fsscript and/or an overlay.
What you do with that fsscript/overlay is completely up to you, however. Keep in
mind that circumventing the license agreement for acrobat reader probably isn't
exactly "legal".
