Doesn't the livecd/bootargs work for you? From what I see in the code,  
ppc has (at least) the following boot args:

default_append_line="root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ${cmdline_opts}  
${custom_kopts} cdroot"

Where cmdline_opts has everything you put in livecd/bootargs I think.
