When catalyst was designed, nobody thought about running it as a non-root user. Well, I'm interested in adding support for running as a non-root user. The problem we're definitely going to face is device node creation. I've spoken with solar about using fakeroot and it is something that we would like to pursue for the next catalyst incarnation. Of course, we want catalyst to use fakeroot/chroot based on catalyst.conf settings, so we can't just replace the current code.
