It was the only way I could get xchat to work, and there's a recoverable
gnome-panel crash that produces the same error.  It's easily emerged
again.  I'm going to try patching gail to remove the asserts. and see if
I can get rid of the related crashes. AFAIK, asserts are only a useful
tool in development.  It's at least worth a try.

Please accept my apology.  I won't do it again.

And I ask the indulgence of the list if _this_ post shows up twice.  I sent it 
originally from evolution, which doesn't properly mung my address the way I 
have mutt set to.  Generally posts to the list from my un-munged address get 
sidelined by the list server and never show up at all.  I never know .....
