It was the only way I could get xchat to work, and there's a recoverable gnome-panel crash that produces the same error. It's easily emerged again. I'm going to try patching gail to remove the asserts. and see if I can get rid of the related crashes. AFAIK, asserts are only a useful tool in development. Generally posts to the list from my un-munged address get sidelined by the list server and never show up at all.
