Does anyone know of any packages in portage that a kid can work with to teach and perhaps let them play with making their own music?

What age group are we talking about? What kind of music? Conventional? MIDI? Weird electronic?

Kids are 5 and 7.

When I was five, I was subjected to piano lessons. I was way too young for that, and never did learn to play the piano, but I did come away with a knowledge of a fair amount of music theory. I later learned how to play the flute, which is quite a bit easier than the piano. :)

In any event, if they're old enough to deal with a music keyboard, I'd recommend some kind of an electronic keyboard instrument that has a MIDI interface. I'm not sure you can buy one that *doesn't* have a MIDI interface, :) And there is quite a bit of software that deals with MIDI. Rosegarden is probably the best overall sequencer / MIDI package.
