I guess you upgraded sun-java as well?
I had the same error. My solution was to switch from
sun-jre-bin-1.6 to sun-jdk-1.6 with the help of eselect
(eselect java-nsplugin set sun-jdk-1.6). After that I had
no problems with firefox.

Thanks for the help everyone. Upgrading java solved the problem. The
java upgrade came with a sync.
