It would be great if you could post a bug on bugs.gentoo.org about it.
I've been using pygtk on python-2.3 for the last two months without any
problems, so I'd be interested to know what sort of problems you ran
into.

As long as you see /usr/bin/python linking to /usr/bin/python2.3 and
portage works, you should be able to unmerge python-2.2 without any
major problems.
