Sounds completely unreasonable to me:

$ ls -ld $HOME
drwx------  137 chutz    users        8312 Jan 24 17:23 /home/chutz
[EMAIL PROTECTED] chutz $ su -
Password: 
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root # su - chutz
[EMAIL PROTECTED] chutz $ 

The problem is somewhere else.
