Being responsible for slotting up sys-libs/db so db-4 could be introduced I must warn you from the hell that you are going to put on yourself allready when providing multiple slotted versions. Every ebuild that links against mysql needs to be checked on whether it correctly gets the wanted mysql, and not headers from one, and the library from the other

Seems you are right, I've done some more testing today and yes it's
tricky, more than all because shell script are buggy, they point to
default locations regardeless of what you specify in the configure
flags. Fix them all is doable but hard to maintain.

it would make any caching performed be invalid.
