Same over experience over here. xorg-x11 acceleration doesn't work "out of the 
box" though.

I totally agree. Are you willing to do this?

Nope, vmware-tools config script thinks it's running on the environment the 
vmware-tools are coppied from (at least the identifier is hardcoded in the 
scripts).

Let me know if you have done this, I'm interested and willing to help with 
this. I have some experience with VMware WS + GSX, Xen and UserMode Linux. 
Maybe we can also add UserMode Linux and Bochs to the mix.
