The example you gave will break if the following are all true: * You have USE="sdl svga" * You have media-libs/svgalib installed * You do not have media-libs/libsdl installed The dependencies will be resolved because of svgalib, but you will not have libsdl installed. Since use sdl will be true, your first condition block will be used, which will presumably do something undesirable... This has absolutely nothing to do with binary packages. Those are a whole different kettle of fish... <preemptive strike against the usual stupidity> The situation will not be solved by USE ranking, nor is a big fat die in pkg_setup the way to go, nor is binary dep tracking a fix. Anyone proposing any of those as solutions has missed the point and is probably just trying to twist this into their favourite soapbox topic. </> And yes, most of the examples in the tree are broken.
