There is a memory leak in python-2.4.1 so 2.4.2 was marked stable on x86.
There isn't much listed in the changelog[1] upstream such as a patch or bug#, but Mr_Bones_ encountered it when running repoman on the full tree causing python to consume >400 megs of memory.
