It allows some hacks on the debug info. For example the debug info records the location where the source was when the executable was built. Debugedit allows one to change this to some other location. As one doesn't want to retain the source in /var/tmp, this is probably a good idea. Besides that one can use debugedit to find out which files are involved and put only those at the other location.
