Gentoo-PPC Meeting Topic Summary, April 30th 2006
1. gcc-4.1
The PPC Team is feeling fairly confident about gcc-4.1 and it seems to already
be a good choice on PPC. We decided that as soon as Halcy0n is ready to move
gcc-4.1 to ~arch, we're ready for that as well. Our base system has cleanly
compiled with gcc-4.1 for some time now and with all of the great work the
gcc-4.1 porters are doing, the tree seems ready for it too. We also discussed
finding packages with gcc-4/gcc-4.1 patches and ensuring that they're marked
ppc stable in anticipation of the eventual stabilization of gcc-4.1.
2. Xorg 7 stabilization
Like gcc-4.1, the PPC Team has had good results with Xorg 7 in ~ppc. We do
need to give some attention to ensuring that modular X dependencies are used
by ppc stable packages so we can consider Xorg 7 for ~ppc.
3. 2006.0-r1 or 2006.1
There were some issues with the 2006.0 release, but overall it still was the
smoothest, least troublesome release we've had yet. There were some packages
missing from the package CD and the cron user was missing from our stages
(even though cron-base was installed), but neither of these issues seem big
enough to force a re-release. We decided to focus on getting kernels
>=2.6.16 ready for release building* and ensuring that the issues we had in
2006.0 are cleared up in time for the 2006.1 release. Also, we found out that
nixnut has one of the troublesome Blue and White G3's that seem to not work
every other release and is willing to test releases on it.
* For those that didn't know, the upstream kernel maintainers changed ppc's
kernel arch from ppc to powerpc and merged the kernel headers for ppc and
ppc64. This has resulted in a bit of breakage and we're still cleaning it
up.
4. ppc.gentoo.org
The ppc.gentoo.org site needs a bit of an overhaul. JoseJX is in the process
of fixing it up. We decided to add a few things to the site as well. Meeting
summaries will be added to the site, as well as some configurations such as
kernel configs for kernel releases for use with Genkernel. Also FAQ updates
and documentation updates were discussed.
5. 2.6.16 stabilization
While ppc has stabilized vanilla-2.6.16, there are still some issues with
2.6.16 at this time. Some external kernel modules don't compile due to kernel
header breakage. klibc is broken due to the ARCH changes. Pegasos machines
will not build with initramfs. The handbook instructions ("make defconfig")
no longer work. Despite that, 2.6.16 is still a step up over 2.6.16 and we'll
be marking gentoo-sources-2.6.16 stable as soon as our documentation is
updated.
6. Summer of Code Projects?
We had a little brainstorm about possible Summer of Code projects. lu_zero is
going to be mentor for SoC for Gentoo and ffmpeg. The SoC ideas will be
summarized and passed to the Gentoo SoC organizers for consideration.
7. Open Floor
We discussed the recent PPC elections low turnout and decided that despite
that, the results were valid. Pylon will be our new Stratigic Lead and JoseJX
will be our new Operational Lead. Morfic decided to step down as PPC kernel
maintainer, kernel maintainence will be done by the team in general for now.
