Well, the source is open, and there are already enough Gentoo devs working on it, so it's not like Gentoo can't control what's being used. Let's say paludis does become the official PM for Gentoo. This would undoubtedly mean that (even more) Gentoo developers would be working on it, likely with Ciaran's (or anyone else without @gentoo.org's) contributions.
