Though in the case of github, gentoo is not "depending upon it".
Github could die in a ball of fire, and it wouldn't change the core
development, it would only change the development for the people who
elected to use github.

Anyone can use any git platform that competes with github, be it
bitbucket, gitorious, or a private git server they created.

Github is just a convenient go-to service for many.
