Well, #1, you should do that anyways.  But, #2, no you don't -need- to
have autoconf already run inside the tarball if you really don't want
to; it's convention but there are projects that don't.  Also, #3,
doing this is as easy as running 'make dist' when you have an
autotools build system, so generating said tarballs for release may
actually be -easier- than what you're doing now.
