I'd personally suggest we endeavour towards making systems in place so
that the performance overheads of metadata generation is much lower, to
the point it can be done efficiently without needing cache
provisioning.

But I'd also like a pony.

( I have ideas using daemons, inotify, and persistent databases as the
primary metadata layer instead of millions of files, but they're all
too complicated and hard )
