udev itself works fine with the flag off.

Please be wary of the Firefox marketing model. Gentoo users are Gentoo
users because Gentoo is easy to customize. If you sacrifice that to make
Gentoo a poor imitation of Fedora in an effort to cater to new users,

  a) New users will choose Fedora anyway, because it's better at being
     Fedora.

  b) Some annoyed Gentoo users will also become Fedora users.
