Could I know what is your rootdisk choice? Are you using busybox (baselayout-lite) or a full system layout? I'm using a baselayout and I've had a lot of trubles on tweaking bootscipts...

Yes, PXA2xx is armv5te, so you can use any arm toolchain. Personally I'm running gentoo on PXA261 and it works fine.
