As written by Natanael, baselayout-2 works great and does everything you asked about. Concerning the mdev stuff: if you think, there is something missing, just have a look at the scripts I send on this list and try a little bit out. It is not really hard and you can adapt or expand the scripts quite easily to your hardware. If you do something like this, please send it on this list. On the other hand, if you want "complete" device file support without writing scripts for mdev, you can use of course udev. Of course it increases the size of your embedded system, but if you can afford this, then just use it. It is fully supported by Gentoo (which is not the case with mdev), so you should have no problems. If you need any tips concerning baselayout-2, just ask and I hope, I can answer your questions.
