I think of aux_get as a simple, low-level, and raw interface to package metadata. I'd rather not see higher level dependency logic mangling this data behind the scenes. If a *DEPEND attribute is needed, I think that it should be an attribute of some higher level package class that provides access to various useful information that's derived from the raw metadata.
