Doh! >From what I can tell the 12-inch is very different from the 15- and 17-inch >models in terms of video.
I followed the gentoo-ppc guide pretty closely, learning the following things
along the way...
Lessons I've learned:
1) When the guide says you need to emerge the appropriate file system tools
(9.d), it lists xfsprogs, reiserfsprogs, and jfsutils, but it doesn't list
e2fsprogs, which you need in order to check ext2/ext3 filesystems; so be sure
to "emerge e2fsprogs" even though it's not in the guide!
2) If you choose to enable "/dev file system support (OBSOLETE)" then make sure
you DO NOT ENABLE "Automatically mount at boot"... this totally (and
magnificently) screws up your boot process when you "emerge udev" (which you
should do) later on.
3) Choosing the right compiler options in make.conf really makes a difference!
I'm attaching my make.conf. Like I commented in the code, the CFLAGS came from:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7012
and the USE flags are slightly modified, but originally came from:
http://vincent.strubel.free.fr/gentoo-pb/files/make.conf
4) X takes a long time to compile, and when done, Xconfigure didn't work
(complained that it couldn't find my mouse or somesuch. So, attaching my
xorg.conf... you'll have to tweak the screen/monitor settings, because you have
an ATi card, and we 12-inch people have Nvidia.
5) KDE takes even longer to compile ("emerge kde"-and-go-to-bed kind of long)
-- that's what I'm doing now. But I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with KDE.
I'm more of a command-line type of guy, so I may end up choosing a window
manager with a little less... "cruft." Although, it sure is pretty (using the
Lipstik theme).
6) I ran into a weird problem whereby my system clock would reset to 1903
whenever I rebooted. I posted to the forums, and someone gave me a good lead:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=286382
7) The real power of Gentoo is not in the build process for your box (although
it is AWESOME), and it's not portage (although it is AWESOME beyond belief), it
is the PEOPLE in the Gentoo community. USE the forums! USE the irc channels!
USE the listserv (oh wait...)! The people are friendly and driven; it's a
great combination!
Later,
chris.
