That's... uh... strange that you couldn't get devfs to compile...

If you're up for a kernel recompile/extended troubleshooting, have you tried 
compiling using the proto-2005.0 PPC livecd kernel?  Emerge gentoo-dev-sources 
to get kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 and move the following file to 
/usr/src/linux/.config before you do make menuconfig... I would try just adding 
devfs support and seeing if it works.

This will produce a bloated kernel, of course, but could help in determining 
what's going on...
