Dear Gentoo Science Devs,

By the way of submitting a new ebuild for the IT++ library
(http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120163 ), I raised the issue of
CBLAS (C interface to BLAS) support in Gentoo.

The IT++ library, which I develop by the way, depends on a set of external
libraries, i.e. BLAS, LAPACK and CBLAS.
By the time of preparing the ebuild for this library I was wondering if
there is a possibility to add "virtual/cblas" to Gentoo, similarly to
"virtual/blas" and "virtual/lapack".

The reason for this new virtual is that CBLAS interface to BLAS is not
always provided by a particular BLAS implementation.

I found working CBLAS interface in the following packages in Gentoo:
- blas-atlas (libcblas.* set by eselect)
- gsl (libgslcblas.*)
- mkl
But unfortunately it is not provided by:
- blas-reference
- acml

Besides, I prepared a new ebuild with NetLib's CBLAS
(http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122958 ), which will extend the
former list.

I think that it would be perfect if "virtual/cblas" could be added for
these packages that provides CBLAS interface.

What is your opinion?

Best regards,

/Adam Piątyszek

PS. I discussed this issue with Markus Dittrich (markusle), who suggested
to post the email to the gentoo-science mailing list.
