| Hello all,
|
| I know this may be a question just for Stuart, but here it goes:
|
| In an announcement made in December, this was stated:
|
| With this update, we are bringing some changes to the Apache
| configuration:
|
| - /etc/apache{,2}/conf is moving to be /etc/apache{,2}
| - new httpd.conf replaces commonapache{,2}.conf and apache{,2}.conf
| files
| - /etc/apache{,2}/conf/vhosts is moving to be /etc/apache{,2}/vhosts.d
|
| When is this going to happen? And with what build of Apache? Will the
| Apache server packages stay in net-www or be moved to apache-www? Will
| this only effect modules? How big of a PITA will this really be? How
| soon will this happen, since it will effect the currently discussed GLEP
| 19? I'd think this is a major enough change that things should be moved
| before a stable tree could be established.

The packages are currently hard masked, and will be moved to unstable
(i.e. ~x86) quite possibly this weekend.

apache-2.0.52-r3 and higher in the 2.x line
apache-1.3.33-r1 and higher in the 1.x line

As to where apache itself will move hasn't been completely decided on,
but it will probably be www-servers.
The modules are all going to move to www-apache.
The moves will take place after we've stabilized all the packages from
the refresh, we want to work all the bugs out caused by the refresh
before causing possibly more bugs by moving a bunch of packages.

There is extensive (albeit still slightly incomplete, as I'm still
finishing it) documentation of our refresh at
http://dev.gentoo.org/~vericgar/doc/apache-package-refresh.html

| Reasoning behind these questions is simple. We established our primary
| web server before things were moved to /var/www and decided to have all
| our sites under /home. All of our administrative scripts still work
| under the current file system configuration, but we need to move
| everything to /var/www and modify the scripts. However, since we do alot
| of automated configuration of apache vhosts configs, it would be nice
| if /etc/apache2 conversion could coincide with this change. I want to
| start using webapp-config, so the change will be necessary, since it
| doesn't allow overriding the default root of /var/www. Which isn't a bad
| thing, we just predate all the changes and would like to catch up with
| the times.

You can use it know, just unmask per the instructions in the
apache-package-refresh document. Most everything is rather stable, we
have been pretty much waiting on completing our documentation and giving
other devs a chance to modify their ebuilds to use the new eclasses.
