Why not vsftpd?  I always preferred proftpd until I discovered vsftpd.
It's incredibly secure for an ftp server, very fast, and easily
configurable with so many options.  I especially like the ease and
flexibility with which you can configure bandwidth limitations.

I've recently moved from proftpd to pure-ftpd, because pure-ftpd offers
a 
virtual chroot feature, which I find very useful.
