This may be a long shot, but is it possible the BIOS battery is dying or is already dead? Also, another thing worth checking and the main reason I respond is, have you considered the possibility of an intrusion? I have seen things gone awry before with the addition of a kernel rootkit, and it might be worth looking into just in case. Probably not the case, but, better safe than sorry.
