Anyone know if Zimbra and/or RoundCube can block external image/object loading from HTML messages like Squirrelmail does? That's the main reason I haven't switched from Squirrelmail to something "prettier" for my family.

Yea, Zimbra is a lot more feature-complete. We weren't looking to provide eg the calendar stuff; we just wanted an easy to use interface to the email accounts.
