Could you share your config file with us? Maybe this can help to assert
that you did not overlook something obvious, before you go on analysing
system calls... :-)


I have created a bug report with all the information I've been able to find and gather:

As you may see there, the config file contains the following:

logoutput: syslog
internal: eth1 port = 1080
external: eth0
user.privileged: sockd
user.notprivileged: sockd
user.libwrap: sockd

I've reduced the config file to this, without including any rule. As I tell in the bug report, the service only starts when all three users are set to root, although it doesn't accept connections.
