Also, what's the filesystem? Some filesystems have distinct performance
advantages over others for different situations. Google can lead you to
whitepapers comparing EXT3, XFS, JFS, Reiser, etc.
I would look into http://www.danga.com/mogilefs/ - you'll then be able
to use existing hardware (on-site hw and the off-site backup hw) as
storage nodes and replication will happen automatically. Only downsides
(the way I see it) are the following:
1) You need to modify your application to use MogileFS
2) You need to take your existing files and store them in MogileFS
But the benefits far outweight the downsides if you ask me...
