I am probably going to catch a lot of crap for this but here goes... qmail
was not designed to do authenticated smtp.  That being said, you need to
patch qmail with either TLS patches or if you are using vpopmail you will
need to patch accordingly and use the vcheckpasswd (if I remember correctly)
in the run script for qmail-smtpd.

I don't know what all is possible in the gentoo USE flags to support this.
I used qmail for years and finally switch to postfix and that has made all
the difference.
