yes... even if I don't mount the partition, it's unusable after a reboot, ala:
root ~ # mount /dev/sdb1 /data mount: you must specify the filesystem type
Perhaps try fdisk instead of parted?
unfortunately, fdisk doesn't support devices larger than 2 TB.
