If you run emerge --pretend -u world you'll notice pam-login and shadow
blocking each other.
Since pam-login functionality has been folded back into shadow you have
to unmerge pam-login and re-emerge shadow - and please don't log out
between these two steps as that will lock you out of your computer :-)
