screen is probably the most straightforward way to do this.
Otherwise you need to figure out how you background a process
so that it won't be killed on logout, which depends on your shell.
In zsh, for example, I might do:
emerge -e world >emerge.log 2>&1 &|
But check out screen. If you've got a flaky connection you'll
love it for everyday work, not just this task.
