Just a quick note, cause that kept me 10 minutes scrubbing through the man 
pages...

I bet Ryan meant /etc/portage/profile/package.provided (one / missing).
I was about to ask if this is some new file for portage :lol:

I think that adding them there is the right way, I use it like that:

 ~ $ cat /etc/portage/profile/package.provided 
sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.6.22.1
sys-apps/pcmcia-cs-3.2.8-r2


Just my two yen (=1.22 euro cents :~).
