Err, thank you for the warning, now I wish to know: I am running UltraSparc 2 with two CPU, does that mean I should avoid using 2.6.x?

I think I have enough trouble with my ultrasparc 2.4.27 kernel, and I am not even sure if I upgrade to 2.6 kernel I will get more problems or less. Maybe I should not use sparc as desktop at all.

I use an untra-2(SMP) as a desktop with no problems, kernel-2.4.27-sparc-r1. For me, on this system, kernels 2.6.x are so unstable as to be unusable.

1) keyboard vs kbd problem in xorg, took me one day to discover;

Sorry. It's a bug in xorg, and I never have pushed it very hard because I keep thinking that kernel-2.6.?? should become stable on these systems *almost any day now*. But that was my thought last December, and I might revisit this.

I have tried as hard as I can to publicize the problem; I know that it is noted in the sticky xorg-x11 forum thread and on my d.g.o/~fmccor site.

2) sound behave strangely. Sometimes it just hangs. I try not to watch any video on that box, usually it gets suddenly silent after watching 20 minutes

Can't comment; don't use sound at all.

3) video behave strangely. With xorg-x11 6.8.0-r3 anything use SDL have wrong color, I have vlc compiled with "ggi" and if I enable "ggi" output, play video == restart X. I thought this is solved in xorg-x11 6.8.2 but upgrade to 6.8.2 only require me add "cfb" module, SDL is still wrong.

Same comment about publicity. Please review the xorg-x11 tracking bug 79467 at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79467,
get the patch, do what comment 6 says (except that it should now read
patch -p0 -b -z- < {path-to-xorg-x11-6.8.1.904-sparc.patch}
and rebuild xorg-x11. This will fix SDL problems for you.

4) xscreensaver seems ignore keyboard interaction / only notice mouse movement. If I write a long email, I'll be interrupted several times.

Can't comment. My screen saver is "dpms off"

If I upgrade to 2.6

* above 1) and 2) may get solved
* I may get extra SMP problem
* I may get extra SCSI problem
* above problem 2) may get even worse

Conclusion: looks like I should not upgrade...

I wouldn't upgrade. I would apply the patch and rebuild xorg for getting SDL right. There is information around on sound support on U2, but I don't have it. You might check #gentoo-sparc IRC or maybe the forums for information.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Ferris
