Because <G>! If you note .bash_profile can't do output or it breaks things like scp, etc. Check back through the threads on how things work (Bruce No??? was the author in response to my questions. I'm not at my machine so I can't get the details but I set up a /etc/bashrc for site/host specific stuff that I wanted on all and then modified my .bash_profile.

The other way around seems to be more useful since it sets up some nice aliases.
