[gentoo-user] X compilation problems

I have just tried installing 1.4rc1 and did an emerge -u world. For some reason when it is updating xfree-4.2.1-r2 I get a lot of permission errors and after a while my computer beeps 3 times and then stops compiling.   The log file contains the following 3 lines repeated over and over again.     chown:    /var/cache/edb     chown:    /var/cache/edb/dep     open_wr:    /var/cache/edb/world   I am logged on as root so I should have permission to do this.   Does anyone have any ideas?   Thanks, Phil
